Griffin Electric wires new College of Arts & Sciences building for University of Alabama at Birmingham

Holliston, MA (September 2018). In the fall of 2019, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is expected to debut a new two-wing, multi-purpose College of Arts and Sciences building.  Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric), a leading electrical subcontractor throughout New England and the Southeast celebrating 40 years in the industry, is currently providing installation work for the 155,000-sf facility.

The new College of Arts and Sciences building, which comes in response in part due to a growing student population, will replace the school’s existing Humanities Building and will host seven departments. The venue will contain five floors in one wing and four floors inanother, and will include more modern teaching facilities, larger classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, space for administrative support offices, and a stormshelter.

The Alabama Griffin team, led by Region Manager Calvin Mize, along with Brian Mobley, Project Manager and Mark Keene, Project Foreman is installing the complete electric lighting and power systems on-site, consisting of a 2,000-amp main switchboard, panel boards with branch circuit monitoring, and a 350 kW generator.  Griffin Electric’s work also involves wiring for lighting fixtures, a fire alarm system, and a lighting control system with daylight harvesting for reduced energy consumption.

Three Birmingham-based firms are also involved with the project, including M.J. Harris Construction Services, LLC and Goodwyn Mills and Cawood, Inc., the general contractor and architect, respectively. Hyde Engineering is serving as the electrical engineer.
