Griffin Electric installs new TRACON Building Air Traffic Control Tower for PTIA

Holliston, MA (August 2019). Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric), a leading electrical subcontractor throughout New England and the Southeast, is currently providing installation work on the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) building at the Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA) in Greensboro, NC. Construction of the 29,000-sf project is expected to be finished in the Fall of 2020.

The purpose of these new additions is to make advances in the safety and efficiency of air travel to and from PTIA. Specifically, the modern infrastructure of the FAA’s new 163-foot-tall tower will provide additional positions for air traffic controllers and will benefit those positions that already exist. With its 4,000-acre campus and three runways, PTIA is the third busiest airport in North Carolina and averages 280 takeoffs and landings every day.

In addition to work on the FAA ATCT and TRACON building, the Charlotte Griffin team, led by Region Manager Tim Passatore, is also tasked with the buildout of a generator and a fiber UG optic system to serve these additions. Griffin Electric is also responsible for installing systems for an uninterruptible power source (UPS), essential, critical and Fire Life Safety (FLS) power, an inverter, as well as lighting control.

In addition to the Griffin Electric team, Archer Western Construction, LLC of Charlotte is the construction manager of the project, while Wiley Wilson of Atlanta is serving as the architect and Guilford County Permitting & Inspections of Greensboro is working as the electrical engineer.
